Teaching
My life was changed when I had my first private saxophone lesson in high school.
When I was young I studied piano for years (even a little guitar), but like many people I never really connected with the instrument. I hated practicing and hardly ever enjoyed actually playing the piano (**side note: as a professional musician I WISH I would’ve taken these lessons more seriously, but….hindsight is 20/20).
Fast forward to my junior year of high school when I nervously asked my parents for saxophone lessons. I wanted to make the district high school honor band, mainly because one of my best friends had previously made it. My parents were skeptical (for good reason) but allowed me to take one month of lessons with a local instructor. In order to keep doing lessons I had to show them I was willing to work really hard…and thankfully I did!
I believe in the value of private lessons.
They present an opportunity for a student to grow musically that in many cases can not be experienced in a larger ensemble setting. The more personal and attentive environment helps create a foundation on which the student can continue to grow throughout their life.
Lessons are tailored to fit a student’s individual needs. Concepts of rhythm, intonation, tone quality, phrasing, and basic music theory can be covered.
More specific focus can be given to:
Technical facility
Articulation
Musicality in performance
Instrument tendencies
Reed maintenance and adjustment
Sight-reading
Repertoire and critical listening
Private lessons foster creativity…and teach discipline.
They also teach time management, goal setting, and performance practice!
You can also request a masterclass or sectional. Topics include:
Breathing and air support
Embouchure fundamentals
Technique practice (scales, arpeggios, etc.)
Reed maintenance and care
Coachings on selected band music
Coachings on All-District/All-State or honor band audition music
Audition tips, tricks, and preparation
